In addition to scheduling a checkup if you notice any abnormal changes in your breasts, getting a mammogram is a very important part of breast health. At East Alabama Health, we are committed to offering you a quick, convenient appointment scheduling process for mammograms as well as easy access to your test results through the patient portal. Patients may self-schedule their mammograms by clicking here.

Mammograms are low-dose x-rays that look for abnormal changes in breast tissue. The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin having annual mammograms at age 45, and switch to having mammograms every other year at age 55.

Women who are considered at high risk, whether it be because of a breast condition or family history, should be screened more often or begin screening earlier. If you fall into the high-risk category, it is a good idea to discuss your breast screening schedule with your doctor.

3D Mammography

In addition to traditional 2D mammography, East Alabama Health also offers patients the option of 3D mammography. 3D mammography combines multiple breast x-rays to create a three-dimensional image of the breast, allowing for clearer observation to help determine if anything suspicious has been found.

3D mammograms can help provide you and your health care team with more information relating to issues such as a breast mass or breast pain and can also help detect breast cancer in people who do not have any other signs and symptoms. The more precise imaging of a 3D mammogram also helps reduce the need for follow-up imaging when compared to a standard mammogram.
