Women are particularly vulnerable to osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones. This disease affects millions of women worldwide, and the alarming fact is that it often remains undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. However, by undergoing a bone density scan, also called a DEXA scan, you can detect potential signs of bone loss early on, allowing for timely intervention and prevention of further complications.

Bone density scans are a simple, quick and effective way to determine your risk of osteoporosis. The scan uses low-dose X-rays to measure the mineral content and density of your bones, typically focusing on areas such as the spine and hips. A bone density scan can typically be completed in 10-20 minutes.

By evaluating bone density, the scan can determine if your bones are normal, have reduced density (osteopenia), or are significantly weakened (osteoporosis). It is a valuable tool in determining the need for preventive measures, lifestyle changes, or medical interventions to maintain or improve bone strength.

Reasons to consider scheduling a bone density scan

  • Early Detection: A bone density scan measures the density of your bones and can identify whether you have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it. Early detection provides an opportunity for proactive measures to maintain bone health.
  • Personalized Risk Assessment: Your bone density scan results will help your health care provider assess your individual risk of fractures and design a tailored plan, including lifestyle modifications and nutritional recommendations, to address any concerns.
  • Preventive Measures: Armed with the knowledge gained from a bone density scan, your health care provider may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements, lifestyle changes to optimize your bone health, and medication, if necessary.
  • Empowerment and Peace of Mind: Having a clear understanding of your bone health status will give you peace of mind and confidence in pursuing a healthier future.

What to expect during a bone density scan

A bone density test is a quick, painless test. The scan itself only takes a few minutes to complete, and you'll want to wear clothes that you are comfortable in when visiting your testing site.

You will be asked to lie down on an examination table, usually on your back. The technician will position your body properly for accurate scanning. The scanning equipment will move slowly over the area being examined, typically the lower spine and hips. It emits low-dose X-rays to measure bone density. You may need to remain still during the scan to obtain clear images.

After the scan, there are usually no restrictions or recovery time required. You can resume your normal activities immediately. The results of the bone density scan will be analyzed by a specialist, who will provide a report to your healthcare provider. They will discuss the findings with you during a follow-up appointment and may recommend further treatment or preventive measures if necessary.
