SANE Program
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
East Alabama Health offers the services of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examinee or SANE. A SANE is a specifically trained nurse specializing in forensic medical exams. This service is available for patients up to 72 hours after an assault has occurred. Our services include medications to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, emergency contraception (the morning after pill), and a forensic examination with evidence collection often referred to as a “rape kit”. This service is offered at East Alabama Medical Center and EAMC-Lanier through the Emergency Department. These services are provided at no cost to the patient. Patients 19 years and older may seek care following a sexual assault without law enforcement notification.
