Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Request an Appointment

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a procedure performed by an ophthalmologist to remove excess skin from the top eyelids. As we age, the skin around the eyes may begin to droop or sag due to excess weight. This “hooding” of the eyelids may give an exhausted appearance and even affect vision. Blepharoplasty can help refresh and rejuvenate the upper face, giving one a more alert, youthful appearance.

Is blepharoplasty right for me?

To determine is an eyelid lift procedure is right for you, it is important to speak with an ophthalmologist. The doctors at Surgical Eye Consultants of East Alabama can provide guidance on the procedure based on your individual needs and family medical history.

What to expect

The procedure may be performed for upper or lower eyelids. For upper blepharoplasty, your surgeon will create an incision in the eye's natural crease, remove excess fat or skin, and then close the cut.

Typically, the procedure can be performed for upper eyelids in about an hour. Eyelid lifts are mostly painless, though you may experience some discomfort on the day of your procedure. It is important that you have a trusted support person to provide you with transportation home after the procedure.

Recovery time and results

After a blepharoplasty, you should plan to avoid any strenuous activities and remain home from work for at least a few days to allow your eyes time to heal. The recovery time typically takes 1-2 week. Your surgeon will provide information and recommendations for your recovery such as how to care for your eyes as they recover, medications to take, and when to schedule a follow up visit.
