Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Request an Appointment

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a safe and simple treatment that minimizes pressure associated with glaucoma. The procedure is performed by an ophthalmologist in-office, and typically may be completed within five minutes.

How does SLT help treat glaucoma?

SLT targets melanin, or pigment, in eyes affected by glaucoma using low-energy pulses of light. This kickstarts the body's natural healing process, which begins to rebuild the cells. This process reduced intraocular pressure and improves drainage. The non-pigmented cells, and the rest of the eye's structure, is untouched and undamaged by the process.

Who would benefit from SLT treatment?

You may be an ideal candidate for SLT if you meet any of the following:

  • If you have primary open-angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, or pigmentary glaucoma.
  • If you've faced challenges adhering to your prescribed glaucoma medication regimen.
  • If maintaining regular follow-up treatments is challenging for you.
  • Have a history of failed ALT (argon laser trabeculoplasty) treatments.

What to expect during the therapy treatment?

Before the procedure begins, your ophthalmologist will provide you with eye drops to prepare your eye and provide mild anesthesia. During the procedure, gentle pulses of light are delivered using a specially-designed microscope. The procedure typically is completed within minutes. Afterward, your ophthalmologist may recommend eye drops to treat any short-term inflammation.

When will I see results?

Usually intraocular pressure decreases within a few weeks following the procedure. Your ophthalmologist may schedule follow-up appointments to check the progress of the treated eye. Since SLT is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes the body's natural healing process, it may be repeated multiple times.
