What does an electrophysiologist (EP) do?

An electrophysiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the electrical activity of the heart and the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders, also known as arrhythmias. They use specialized equipment and techniques to study the electrical signals that control the heartbeat and may perform procedures such as catheter ablation, pacemaker implantation and defibrillator implantation to help manage these conditions.

What type of tests do EPs provide?

An electrophysiologist may use various tests to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart and diagnose arrhythmias, including:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) - tests that use sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart.
  • Holter monitor - portable device that records the electrical activity of the heart over a 24-48 hour period to evaluate heart rhythm abnormalities.
  • Event monitor - a portable device that records the electrical activity of the heart intermittently over a period of time, typically several weeks, to detect and diagnose heart rhythm disturbances.
  • Electrophysiology study (EPS) - a minimally invasive procedure that involves threading catheters into the heart to evaluate its electrical activity and determine the cause of arrhythmias.
  • Tilt table test - a diagnostic test that involves placing the patient on a table that tilts to evaluate their response to changes in position and diagnose conditions.

These tests can help the electrophysiologist determine the underlying cause of the arrhythmia and develop a treatment plan.
