Glaucoma
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve on an eye. According to the CDC, nearly 3 million American are affected by some form of glaucoma. The ophthalmologists at Surgical Eye Consultants of East Alabama help patients navigate the best way to treat their glaucoma.
Types of Glaucoma
- Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type faced by patients. It results in pressure on the eye's optic nerve from a backup of fluid due to improper drainage. This gradually damages the eye over time. Patients may not even know they have glaucoma until symptoms develop. Open-angle glaucoma includes both Normal-Tension Glaucoma (where damage occurs despite normal pressure levels) and the classic open-angle form.
- Angle-closure glaucoma is caused by a blockage in the eye's drainage system leading to a sudden increase in eye pressure. This type of glaucoma is considered a emergency emergency and requires immediate treatment.
- Secondary glaucoma refers to several types of glaucoma that develop due to other medical conditions or external factors such as traumatic glaucoma (caused by injuries), pigmentary glaucoma (caused by pigment blockages), and exfoliative glaucoma (linked to material shed by the eye).
Glaucoma Symptoms
The different glaucoma types do not have early symptoms, making it extremely important for you to get regular screenings for eye to detect glaucoma. An affected patient may notice a gradual loss of vision as the condition develops. Glaucoma can cause vision loss or impairment, and even blindness without proper treatment.
Glaucoma Treatment Options
Damage caused by glaucoma is non-reversible. However, early detection and treatment can help prevent further vision loss. Each patient has unique needs, and may require a different treatment for glaucoma. Our team at Surgical Eye Consultants of East Alabama will work with you to identify the best glaucoma treatment that fits your needs.
- Eye drops: Eye drops can help maintain regular drainage of fluid from the eye.
- Selective laser trabeculoplasty: A painless, safe outpatient procedure performed in-office that reduces intraocular pressure caused by glaucoma and may improve vision.
- Surgery: Your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to drain fluid from the eye if medications or laser therapy have not worked.
