Mitral Regurgitation
When the mitral valve between the left heart chambers cannot close properly it is classified as mitral regurgitation. This causes blood to flow backwards through the heart. Over time, this can lead to heart enlargement, irregular heart rhythms, and heart failure.
Symptoms
Mitral regurgitation symptoms often develop gradually, or symptoms might not be noticeable. Some symptoms include:
- Coughing
- Exhaustion
- Lightheadedness
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
Treatment
Treating mitral regurgitation depends upon multiple factors including symptoms, what caused the condition, and your heart’s health. Your cardiologist can work with you to identify a treatment plan that fits your needs. That treatment plan may include medications to manage the symptoms, or a surgical procedure to fix or repair the affected valve.
