Guidelines for Clinical Placements, Preceptorships, Internships, and Practicums

East Alabama Health affiliates with many colleges and educational programs to offer students experience in their areas of focus through clinical placements, preceptorships, internships, and practicums. These clinical experiences allow students to apply theory into practice while under supervision of clinical instructors and hospital staff. 

  • All clinical and internship experiences must be pre-arranged and approved by East Alabama Health.
  • Due to the large volume of clinical and internship requests, East Alabama Health may not be able to accommodate all requests.
  • In the event a request cannot be honored, an East Alabama Health representative will inform the school/student so that alternative clinical opportunities can be arranged.
Clinical and Internships Opportunities are frequently requested in the following areas:
  • Speech
  • Cardiac Rehab
  • Radiology
  • Rehab Works (Auburn & Opelika) – PT/OT
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Social Work
  • Nursing
  • Nutrition and Food Services
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Medical Assistants
  • Business Administration
  • Other department requests must be arranged and approved on an individual basis.

Preceptorship opportunities are not available in East Alabama Health’s Psychiatry or NICU departments.

East Alabama Health Clinical Placements, Preceptorships, Internships, and Practicums Guidelines and Information

  • Clinicals and Internships must be arranged through East Alabama Health’s Education Department.
  • Before a student can attend a clinical opportunity, East Alabama Health must have a current signed program affiliation agreement on file.
  • All clinical students and interns are required to attend a non-employee orientation prior to beginning the experience and are responsible for making the appointment for the orientation. See contact information below.
  • Proof of immunizations, background checks, drug screenings, and BLS certification (if required) must be documented and validated prior to orientation.
  • Proof of BLS certification, if required
  • Clinical students must be supervised at all times by their preceptors and instructors.
  • Name badges must be worn at all times during clinical experiences and are provided upon completion of orientation, as needed.
  • Schedules for nursing and preceptor placements must be pre-arranged by East Alabama Health Education Department.
Clinical Placements, Preceptorships, Internships, and Practicums Orientation Opportunities

Orientation is held at East Alabama Heath Education Center, 2027 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL on the following days/times. You must have a scheduled appointment to attend.

  • Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m.
  • Thursdays at 2 p.m.

Orientation will take approximately 45 minutes. In order to complete orientation, please bring proof of the following:

  • A current TB skin test
  • Proof of Influenza vaccination (during flu season)
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (all 3) or positive titer
  • MMR (both vaccines) or a positive titer
  • 2 varicella vaccines (2) or positive titer
  • Recent TDAP
