When you come to the Spencer Cancer Center, you will be cared for by a team of professionals. This allows us to provide care that addresses every aspect of your diagnosis.

Oncologists

Oncologists are physicians who have specialized in treating and fighting cancer. They work with your other doctors to keep them informed of your progress in treatment. Oncologists generally specialize in either medical oncology (using drugs or chemotherapy to treat cancer) or radiation oncology (using a type of x-ray or radiation to treat cancer).

Hematologists

Hematologists are physicians who specialize in the treatment of blood disorders, which are often not cancer-related.

Oncology Nurses

Oncology nurses are registered nurses who have received specialized training or certifications in the management and treatment of people with cancer. These may include infusion nurses, who provide care to patients by administering fluids, blood products, and chemotherapy and other antineoplastic agents intravenously or other appropriate route.

Radiation Therapists

Radiation therapists are registered and certified x-ray technologists who have received advanced training in the safe and accurate delivery of radiation therapy.

Dosimetrists

Dosimetrists are radiation therapists who have received specialized training in treatment planning. Our dosimetrist is board-certified in medical dosimetry. The dosimetrist, using a special computer, plots the sites to be treated to assure optimal treatment results.

Medical Physicists

Medical physicists help assure the safe and accurate delivery of radiation therapy by participating in treatment planning, reviewing all patient treatment plans and calibrating the radiation treatment equipment. The medical physicist oversees radiation safety and quality.

Oncology Social Workers

Oncology social workers provide counseling, education, information services, and referrals to community resources to people with cancer and their families and friends. In addition, oncology social workers help people navigate the health care system and find support to manage the day-to-day challenges of living with cancer.

Breast Health Navigator

A breast health navigator is a nurse who learns a person’s needs and problems that hinder care. Working with knowledge of the community’s resources, the navigator then uses a problem-solving approach to address them. Navigators also may provide cancer information, connect the patient to cancer resources, and lend emotional support.

Clinical Navigator

The clinical navigator is an oncology nurse navigator who works collaboratively with the navigation team to remove barriers to care for patients under active treatment. The navigator provides in-depth patient education and assists with coordination of care and development of the survivorship care plan.
